Building communities

What do you think of when you hear the word community?

Is this a community?

One sort of community is a group of people who live together in one place – maybe a village, a housing estate or a particular road in a town.

a community

We also use the word community when people have a shared interest, like a culture, a religion, a job or a hobby – for example, the Muslim community, the farming community or the school community. So you can be a member of more than one community at a time.

What communities do you belong to? There could be quite a few, for example your school, your country, your religion, your neighbourhood.

Anthony

Anthony, tell us a bit about yourself...

I'm Anthony. I'm English and I'm also Greek. I support Tottenham Hotspur FC and I live in North London. I am a Christian. I am part of my local tennis team...

Whatever we mean by community, the key sense of the word is sharing. People in a community have something in common.
