Your future, your choice

If you're under 16, the chances are that the choices open to you about what you do with your life are quite limited. The law in this country says that people under 16 have to go to school and parents/carers have a legal responsibility to look after them. You are allowed to work for short periods once you reach the age of 13, but other than that, you'll find that it probably doesn't seem like there are many choices you can make by yourself.

However, as you approach school-leaving age at 16, you do have more choices, especially about what you want to do for a career and how you want to live your life.

discussion Think about what your parents or carers let you decide for yourself. What kinds of choices do you think you will have to make as you get older?

Think about the kind of person you are. Unless you know what you're good and not so good at, what you feel enthusiastic about and what you need to improve on, it'll be hard to make the right decisions about your future.
